India’s shrimp industry is massive — a ₹35,000 Cr+ export market — yet for years, it has operated with limited data, weak financing access, and almost no formal infrastructure.
This is the gap AquaExchange is trying to solve.
Founded by Pavan Kosaraju, Hemasundar Dhavili, Kareem Mohammod, and Kiran Bandi, the startup is building a full-stack platform for shrimp farming, combining IoT devices, AI models, financing, insurance, and market linkages. Today, it operates across 71,000+ acres and serves nearly 6,000 farmers, bringing structure to an otherwise fragmented ecosystem.
From Ground-Level Problems to Data-Driven Farming
The idea for AquaExchange didn't come from theory — it came from the ground. While studying shrimp farms, the founders realised that most decisions were based on manual records or guesswork. There was no reliable way to track farm conditions, predict risks, or verify quality.
To solve this, they started by embedding technology directly into farm operations. One of their earliest products, Powerman, is an IoT device that monitors aeration systems — critical for shrimp survival. Even a few hours of power failure can destroy an entire crop. Today, 20,000+ devices are deployed, generating real-time alerts and insights for farmers.
From there, AquaExchange expanded into:
Automated feeding systems
Water quality monitoring tools
Farm analytics platforms
The goal was simple: capture real-time farm data and turn it into actionable insights.
AI + IoT: Bringing Precision to Shrimp Farming
AquaExchange’s core strength lies in combining AI with on-ground data collection.
The platform uses:
Image analysis to detect early signs of disease
Hydrophones to analyse shrimp feeding patterns
AI models for feed optimisation and farm planning
Even data collection is simplified through WhatsApp-based AI agents, eliminating the need for complex apps.
This approach makes advanced analytics accessible even to small farmers, not just large enterprises.
From Data to Fintech: Unlocking Credit & Insurance
Once data visibility improved, AquaExchange moved beyond farming tools into financial services.
Traditionally, shrimp farmers struggled to access credit due to lack of reliable risk assessment. AquaExchange solved this by creating farm-level risk scoring systems, enabling banks and NBFCs to lend with confidence.
Then came insurance innovation. Unlike traditional policies that cover only weather risks, AquaExchange enabled disease-based insurance using real-time farm data. In just six months, farmers claimed over ₹2 Cr for disease-related losses.
Closing the Loop with Market Access
The final layer of AquaExchange's model is market linkage.
By digitising farm data and partnering with certification bodies like ASC and BAP, the platform helps farmers
meet global quality standards, access export markets, and improve pricing and credibility.
This creates a full-stack ecosystem:
Farm → Data → Finance → Insurance → Market Access.
Growth, Competition & Market Opportunity
AquaExchange operates in a growing agritech ecosystem alongside players like AquaConnect, DeHaat, and Arya.ag, while also overlapping with supply chain companies like Captain Fresh and WayCool.
Despite funding slowdowns in agritech, investor interest is shifting toward AI + IoT-led precision agriculture, which works strongly in AquaExchange's favour.
The startup recently raised $8 Mn in Series B funding and is targeting:
₹275 Cr revenue in FY26
profitability by FY27
Increasing tech contribution to 25% of revenue
Scaling Beyond India
After building a strong presence in states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, AquaExchange is now expanding globally.
It has already entered:
Ecuador (world's largest shrimp exporter)
Saudi Arabia
Madagascar
Vyapaarवाणी Takeaway : Building Infrastructure, Not Just a Product
AquaExchange's journey highlights a powerful insight — real disruption happens when you build infrastructure, not just tools.
By embedding technology directly into farms and layering finance, insurance, and market access on top, the company is transforming shrimp farming into a data-driven, scalable ecosystem.
And the bigger vision goes beyond shrimp.
If this model works, it can extend to fish, poultry, and dairy, creating a unified digital backbone for India's animal-protein economy.
