How Pilgrim Achieved 24x Growth In The Beauty Industry?
Founded in 1985 by brothers Ajay and Sanjay Bhatia, Laborate Pharmaceuticals began with a mission to make medicines affordable and reliable for ordinary families. Over the years, it has evolved from a regional family business into a global pharmaceutical leader.
In its initial years, Laborate focused on key high-demand areas such as antibiotics, pain management, respiratory care, and paediatrics, producing well-known products like Ceflox, Clonac Plus, and C-Zin. These products embodied the company’s core philosophy of quality, affordability, and widespread availability.
The company grew steadily in the 1990s and early 2000s, expanding its presence from Haryana to pan-India. Building trust with local pharmacists and improving logistics networks were key to its growth strategy, allowing Laborate to break into Tier II and Tier III towns where affordability was crucial.
Moving from Regional to National
The transition from a north-centric distribution model to a pan-India network was a turning point for Laborate. This expansion required operational rigor, and the company worked to develop state-level partnerships, enhanced logistics, and trust-building strategies with pharmacies.
By the early 2000s, Laborate had expanded its institutional and export verticals while investing in WHO-GMP-compliant manufacturing facilities, positioning itself for growth in both domestic and international markets.
A Global Vision: Parag Bhatia Joins the Company
In 2015, Parag Bhatia, Ajay’s son, joined Laborate after completing his postgraduate studies in International Management. With his international experience, he brought in structure and modernisation to the company. Parag’s leadership helped scale the company’s revenue from ₹300 crore to ₹1,600 crore, expanding into over 55 countries.
Laborate diversified into 3,000+ formulations ranging from generics and nutraceuticals to herbal wellness and personal care, allowing it to strengthen its position as an integrated healthcare solutions provider.
Diversification: Beyond Generic Drugs
One of Parag's first moves was to build Laborate’s cosmetics and wellness division, tapping into a previously untapped market. As the company diversified, it expanded its portfolio to include nutraceuticals, herbal formulations, and private-label manufacturing for both domestic and international markets.
In addition, Parag led the charge for global certifications, including EU-GMP compliance, which opened doors to markets like the EU, Australia, Canada, and South Africa.
Direct to Retail (D2R) Innovation: A Strategic Shift
In 2022, Laborate launched Aqualab, a D2R vertical aimed at simplifying last-mile distribution and connecting trusted formulations directly with pharmacists and consumers. This innovation helped deepen the company’s understanding of consumer needs and made its products more accessible.
Parag explains, “Pharmacists were becoming the first point of guidance for everyday wellness. We needed to make it easier for them to access the products their customers asked for.”
This shift represented a key turning point in how Laborate viewed its relationship with the retail ecosystem.
Looking Ahead: Scaling and Expanding
With its continued focus on quality, reliability, and affordability, Laborate Pharmaceuticals is positioned for future growth. The company plans to expand further into global markets and continue innovating in the wellness and diagnostics sectors.
Laborate’s journey from a small family-run business to a global player in the pharmaceutical space highlights the importance of innovation, diversification, and market understanding.
