About the Currency Converter

This INR currency converter converts between the Indian rupee and eight major currencies — US dollar, euro, British pound, Singapore dollar, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Japanese yen and Chinese yuan. Enter an amount, choose the currency and the direction, and the tool shows the converted value along with the rate for one unit and the date of that rate.

It is designed for exporters, importers, freelancers billing overseas clients, and businesses paying for foreign software or services. Use it to prepare a quotation, check a proforma invoice or estimate the rupee value of a receivable. It is quick, free and needs no login, and the swap button flips the conversion between foreign currency to rupees and rupees to foreign currency.

The result depends on the amount and on the reference rate. Rates are the European Central Bank's reference rates, delivered through a free public feed and refreshed periodically rather than tick by tick. They are indicative mid-market figures; the rate your bank, card network or remittance provider applies will include a margin and charges.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. 2Choose the currency from the list.
  3. 3Use the swap button to set the direction: foreign currency to INR, or INR to foreign currency.
  4. 4Read the converted amount, the rate for one unit and the date of the reference rate.

How this is calculated

Foreign currency to INR: result = amount × INR value of one unit. INR to foreign currency: result = amount ÷ INR value of one unit. INR value of one unit = 1 ÷ (reference rate of that currency per 1 INR).

Frequently asked questions

Which currencies does the INR currency converter support?

It converts between the rupee and the US dollar, euro, British pound, Singapore dollar, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Japanese yen and Chinese yuan. Currencies that are not published on the reference-rate feed, such as the UAE dirham and the Saudi riyal, are not available in this tool.

How current are the exchange rates?

The tool uses the European Central Bank's reference rates, which are published on working days, and it shows the date of the rate below the result. Rates are also cached for a few hours for speed. They are therefore suitable for estimates, but not for decisions that depend on minute-by-minute market movements.

Why is my bank's rate different from the one shown?

Reference rates are mid-market indicators. Banks, card networks and remittance providers quote separate buying and selling rates that include their margin, and they may add conversion or transfer charges and applicable taxes. Ask your bank for its applicable rate before you finalise a high-value transaction or fix the price in a contract.

How do I convert USD to INR, or INR to USD?

Select USD in the currency list. With the direction button showing “→ INR”, the amount you enter is treated as dollars and converted to rupees. Click the button to switch to “INR →”, and the amount is treated as rupees and converted to dollars. The same steps work for every listed currency.

Can I use this rate on export invoices or for customs?

Use it for estimates and quotations only. Statutory valuation follows officially notified rates — for example, customs valuation uses the exchange rates notified by CBIC, and your accounts follow the rate prescribed by the applicable accounting standards. Confirm the correct rate with your customs broker or chartered accountant.

Is the currency converter free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no registration and places no limit on the number of conversions. If live rates cannot be fetched at a particular moment, the tool displays a message instead of a figure; try again after a short while, since the underlying feed is a free public service.
