About the Area Converter
Property papers in India rarely agree on a unit. A builder quotes square feet, the sale deed may state square metres, a farm is described in acres or hectares, and local records use cents in the south, guntha in the west and grounds in and around Chennai. This converter switches between all of these at once, so you can compare offers and check documents on equal terms.
The factors used are the standard ones: one acre is 43,560 square feet, 100 cents or 40 guntha; one guntha is 1,089 square feet; one ground is 2,400 square feet; one hectare is 10,000 square metres, or about 2.47 acres; and one square yard, commonly called gaj, is 9 square feet. Square feet and square metres are linked by the exact definition of the foot.

Frequently asked questions
Why are bigha, katha and other local units not included?
Because they do not have one fixed size. A bigha in one state can be several times larger than a bigha in another, and the measure can even differ between districts. Converting it with a single factor would give a wrong answer, so for such units rely on the factor stated by your local revenue office.
How many square feet are there in one acre, one cent and one guntha?
One acre is 43,560 square feet. A cent is one hundredth of an acre, or 435.6 square feet, and a guntha is one fortieth of an acre, or 1,089 square feet, which equals 121 square yards. One ground, the unit used for plots in Tamil Nadu, is 2,400 square feet.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply square feet by 0.092903, or divide by 10.764. A 1,200 square foot flat is therefore about 111.48 square metres. To go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.764. The converter uses the exact definition of the foot, so results match official conversion tables.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
Both measure land, but the hectare is the metric unit and is larger. One hectare is 10,000 square metres, or about 2.471 acres, and one acre is about 0.4047 hectares. Government notifications and agricultural schemes usually state land in hectares, while private sales are more often quoted in acres.
Is gaj the same as a square yard?
In most of North India, gaj is used to mean a square yard, which is 9 square feet or about 0.836 square metres. A 100 gaj plot is therefore 900 square feet. A few local traditions use a slightly different gaj, so confirm the figure in square feet or square metres in the registered document.
