A guide, not a legal opinion — many brands file in more than one class (e.g. a SaaS product often files in Class 9 and Class 42). Confirm the exact class before filing your trademark application.

About the Trademark Class Finder

The trademark class finder helps you identify the right class for your trademark application. Type what you sell — for example spices, clothing, mobile app or restaurant — and the tool searches all 45 classes of the Nice Classification, showing each matching class with a plain-English summary and familiar Indian examples.

It is written for founders, brand owners, D2C sellers and small businesses filing their first trademark, and for professionals who want a quick reference. Choosing the wrong class is a costly mistake, because protection extends only to the goods or services in the classes you file under, and the fee is charged for each class.

Results depend on the words you search and the filter you choose. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services. Many brands need more than one class — a SaaS product, for instance, often files in both Class 9 and Class 42 — so search separately for each product and each service you offer.

How to use it

  1. 1Type your product or service in simple words, such as “spices”, “software” or “restaurant”.
  2. 2Use the filter to see all 45 classes, only goods or only services.
  3. 3Read the summary and examples on each matching card to find the closest fit.
  4. 4Repeat the search for every product or service you sell under the brand, and note each relevant class.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trademark class?

Trademarks are registered for specific goods or services, which are grouped into 45 classes under the international Nice Classification that India follows. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services. Your application must name the class or classes relevant to what you sell under the mark.

How do I use the trademark class finder to pick the right class?

Search for what you actually sell under the brand, not for your industry in general. Read the summaries and examples, and choose the class whose description matches your goods or services. If nothing matches, try a simpler word, as the tool suggests — for example “food”, “app” or “clothing”.

Can I file a trademark in more than one class?

Yes, and many businesses should. If you sell packaged snacks and also run a café under the same name, the goods and the restaurant service fall in different classes. Official fees are payable for each class, so prioritise the classes that cover your main revenue and add others as the brand grows.

Which trademark class applies to software, apps and SaaS?

According to the class descriptions in this tool, downloadable software and mobile apps fall in Class 9, while software development, SaaS and cloud services fall in Class 42. Many technology companies file in both. An online marketplace or retail platform may also need Class 35, which covers retail and advertising services.

Which class covers clothing, food products and restaurants?

Clothing, footwear and headgear are in Class 25. Processed foods such as dairy products, pickles and edible oils are in Class 29, and staples such as spices, tea, flour, biscuits and namkeen are in Class 30. Restaurants, cafés, cloud kitchens and catering services fall in Class 43.

Does this tool check whether my brand name is available?

No. It identifies classes only. Before filing, search the public trademark records of the Trade Marks Registry for identical or similar marks in your classes. The finder is a guide and not a legal opinion, so confirm the class and the wording of your specification before you submit the application.
